Poe

Edgar Allan Poe had a very hard life, and it showed through in his writing. His mother died when he was very young, and his father left his family. His foster mother died, he was estranged from his foster father, and both of his wives died. He dropped out of college, enlisted in the military, and then dropped out again, this time discharged after finding someone to take his place. The many dark happenings in his life sent him into a deep depression, making him withdrawn and angry. He vented his feelings in many of his works, including the Raven, which was written about after the time that his mother died. Many of his works include death and madness of his characters, which is reflected through how he viewed his own life. Lastly, his stepfather kept his stepmothers death a secret from him. Poe was outraged, and you can see how this affected him as many of his stories deal with secrets and betrayal, usually leading up to the death of one of the characters.

  1. This definitely shows why Poe wrote the way he did and why he wrote what he did. Do you think this was the only thing that lead him to write? Would he have written stuff even if his life had taken a completely different direction? If so, do you think his writing style would have been different and as well as his content (I.e. happier stories)?

  3. This explains why Poe's writings were so dark and eerie. He was a very unlucky man to lose all of his close relatives the way he did, but I do have to say that these unfortunate events were probably the main reason why he became such a great writer.

  4. Your blog included a lot of info in such little space. This does display why Poe had this type of writing style because of the death and unknown in his own life which he portrayed in his stories

  5. I appreciated your very informative writing about Poe's life and who he was as a person in general. So much background information really helps make the connection between Poe himself and all of his writing.

  6. Great, well organized piece about the major occurrences in Poe's life, but not very analytical. It would've been great to know your opinions on Poe's work.
I love how you were able to condense so much information into a short amount of space!!
